To install the hand controls, simply screw the accelerator and brake pedal clamps (these are at the bottom of the hand controls) onto the pedals.  No tools are required, you simply use your fingers to tighten the bolt screws.  The bolt screws as provided in the kit, along with everything needed for driving using only your hands.  Time taken for installation can be as little as two minutes.

Once the pedal clamps have been tightly secured to both the accelerator and brake pedal, you loop the steering wheel mount strap over the steering wheel mount and fasten it to the hand controls.  The strap holds the hand controls in position just below the steering wheel – this allows close proximity to the turn signals as well as allowing drivers with large hands to both control the hand controls with the palm of the hands while using the fingers to help operate the steering wheel.

For optimal positioning we recommend adjusting the length of the hand controls (which are adjusted in a similar fashion to length adjustable crutches) so the length reaches up to directly underneath your steering wheel.  However, some drivers prefer free standing hand controls that rest on their laps so installation of the steering wheel mount strap is optional.

Portable Freedom Staff Hand Control

A picture of the FS kit installed in a car. Notice the steering wheel mount strap and pedal clamps for optimal installation. In this picture the hand controls are positioned quite low down – however the strap is length adjustable allowing for positioning closer to the steering wheel.

An instructional manual with precise instructions is provided and should be followed exactly.

Operate the hand controls via a push/pull mechanism to accelerate/brake.  This device is designed primarily for drivers who cannot drive with both their legs.  Driving experience is comparable to other permanently installed hand controls which require manual hand strength.  For inexperienced drivers we recommend several days of safe/light driving before driving in busy areas.

Many people email us worried about whether it can be installed on their specific vehicle type.  All vehicles with the regular pedal configuration are suitable.  The hand controls rods are also length adjustable meaning almost all vehicle sizes are suitable.  The steering mount strap can be adjusted and raised/lowered depending on the driver’s leg room and comfortability.

When purchased from our company we provide the whole FS kit which consists of four parts.  The hand controls (as seen in the pictures above), a blue storage bag, a steering wheel spinner knob and the steering wheel mount strap.

There are a few key differences between the FS hand controls and other portable hand controls which we sell.  Uniquely the FS Kit arrives with a steering wheel mount strap which can be positioned in conjunction with the hand controls’ metal rods to position the hand controls directly beneath the steering wheel.  This is useful for people who want the hand controls in a central position close to the turn signals and steering wheel.  Some people prefer it, some do not – but at least you have the choice to find out.

Secondly, the FS hand controls handle is one long attached bar, instead of being completely separated (as in the Peddle Master hand controls) or having a brake hand control handle and a thumb accelerator (as in the TNT hand controls).

Thirdly, unlike the Peddle Master hand controls this is length adjustable allowing it fit almost all vehicle sizes – it’s also collapsable allowing for it to be folded up and placed in the travel bag.

Fourthly, it arrives as a kit with everything you need for driving – most usefully with a steering wheel knob which is important for safe one handed steering.  As well as the steering wheel mount strap which gives you the flexibility to find out which style of positioning is most comfortable to you.  The travel bag is useful for taking your hand controls on vacation and installing them on rental vehicles.

Firstly although it was designed in the USA it’s manufactured in China (all our other hand controls are made in the USA) which some people do not like.  In terms of build quality I would say it’s worse than the TNT hand controls but actually superior to the Peddle Master hand controls (which have much more plastic).  Owning to it being manufactured in China allows us to pass on the discount to our valued customers.  If you weren’t told it was made in China the quality is of such a high level that you’d likely have assumed the US.

The FS Kit includes the push/pull hand controls, as well as a carry bag, spinner knob and steering wheel mount strap.

No permanent vehicle modifications necessary – maintain your vehicle’s value by not causing permanent damage.  Installed and removed in under ten minutes.

I was worried it wouldn’t fit my van…. but you can change the length so it fitted fine – driving with them is ok but after an hour or so my arms get really tired. Fine for everyday use though,, but not long journeys.

does what it says on the tin.. no problems so far

  3. Rated 5 out of 5

Better than expected. Handles pretty well and smooth push pull action like advertised… these replaced my old hand controls and the best thing about them is I can have them put in when I want to drive or taken out when my wife wants to. Recommended.

I always thought you had to have car controls installed for you by a professionally qualified mechanic or some such. It seems I had not kept with the times and these FS hand controls are as easy as pie to install. The instruction manual isn’t very clear but it’s all quite self-explanatory… Overall I’m impressed with these DIY install hand controls!

Firstly I want to say these work fine and I had no problems with actually using them… I personally just didnt like the feel of them so I returned them. They’re a bit different from what im used to and id prefer to fork out the extra money to get something similar to what ive used for the last decade or so. They make you pay for the shipping.

I was looking at getting hand controls installed but had put it off after being a little discouraged at how much they would cost. My wife surprised me with these hand controls which I never even knew existed. I was a little confused at what I was looking at when I first unwrapped them..!! It was a very happy Christmas.

Couldn’t believe there would be something trustworthy on the market for disabled driving, especially at this price. Thought i would have to fork out 3 grand to have mechanical controls installed but wanted to at least give these a try first. They arnt the prettiest things but they work perfectly, and its saved me a hell olot of money and hassle..Thanks a lot i will recommend!

Installation is not easy the first time. You will need to get the hang of it. Once you do it’s much faster. Operation is surprisingly easy (pull for accelerator and push for brakes). Taking them off is very easy (takes about 30 seconds). For new vehicles you will need to readjust the length to make sure it fits. Lightweight, well-made metal hand controls. Only thing that can be a bit annoying is switching between the accel and brake peds… but not that big of a deal to me. I was thinking of getting their new MD PRO hand control however didn’t think it was worth the price just for 2-handed steering and one handle.
